The Remains of the Day

The Remains of the Day
Kazuo Ishiguro

The Remains of the Day was written by Kazuo Ishiguro. It was awarded the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 1989.

This story is told in the first-person narration of an English butler, Stevens. In the summer of 1956, Stevens receives a letter from Miss Kenton who worked as a housekeeper of Darlington Hall with him. In this letter, she describes her unhappy marriage life, so he begins to think she wishes to come back Darlington Hall. He takes a short holiday to visit her.  And...

This story is a personal story of Stevens. It takes him into the depths of the English countryside, but also into the depths of his own past. I think he is a butler of dignity, but he is a sad person. In this story, he don't describe his feelings and thoughts, so readers have to comprehend what he is thinking. This story is very difficult for me, so I couldn't understand completely. I want to read again and clear up.
