The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden
Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnet

This story was wrriten in 1909 by Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnet. She was born in England, Manchester. She is known to people as a writer of juvenile literature.

The opening scene in this story will be surprising. Speaking of the main character in Japan, you will imagine an innocent girl, but in this story is not. The main character called Mary is selfish, bad-tempered and not cheerful. She is not cute. She is lonely. Her father is very busy and her mother doesn't come home to go to the parties. She spends much time with her servants. One day, she lose her parents and servants due to illness. She is adopted into her uncle who lives in England, Yorkshire. She have nothing to do there. At that moment, she hear about the secret garden from a new servant. It is closed by her uncle's command since a certain incident happened. She has interest in it. She starts to look for it with having help from many people and she know a human love. Can she find the secret garden?

The theme of this story is a human love. I felt the importance of family and friends. This story reminds us a human love that we usually forget. I like the scene Mary get over loneliness and have a kind heart. It warmed my heart to read this book. I recommend this book to classmates. If you have interest in it, please read this!

  1. I also read this book. It reminded me how important relationship is. It's a good ending that's the reason why I liked the book. Mary would live happily after that, I hope...
