Birthday Party

   This story was written in 1948. In restraurant, there is a married couple. a wife is very cute and a husband looks serious and calm. She plans surprise to her husband in order to celebrate his birthday. Then, a big cake is carried to him and orchestra play suddenly. She thinks that he is very glad and happy. A lot of guests around them also celebrate him. However, he takes a contrary attitude. He is not glad at all and he has an unhappy look. The situation changes to bad. The guests around them take in the situation. He is certainly  dissatisfied with her action, so she feels sad. She cries hopelessly and quietly.
  I think this is a relationship problem. Maybe, they have not been married long, so they did not deeply understand each other.  It must be a first time that she surprised him like this. She always celebrated his birthday with normal cake at home, so she did not know what he dislikes. He might be very shy. He did not like what people make a big show and also he did not want to attract attention.  They had different opinions about a way of celebrating. That is my opinion. If I were the wife, I would cry like her.
