Gone with the Wind Part 1

‘Gone with the wind’ is a story of love and war (American civil war) and one of the best-selling books all the time. The author is Margaret Mitchel, who enjoyed writing and telling stories at an early age. ‘Gone with the wind’ is the only novel that she wrote ever. And this story made her really famous.

Scarlett was a beautiful and strong girl. She loved Ashley, who was from very rich family and she wanted to marry him. But this handsome, rich and intelligent man decided to marry different girl named Melanie. It shocked Scarlett very hard. The time has come Ashley had to go to fight. And the fear was getting to spread across the town. Of course for Scarlett, too…

The time of this story is American civil war. Scarlett and her family and friends were Southern where people agreed with having black people as slaves for their cotton plantations. But people from North and President Lincoln didn’t support their idea. That’s why the war broke out. However, it was clear that the South would lose. There were no factory to make weapons in South and had less experience about fighting than North. In spite that, they decided to fight.

I really recommend you to read this novel!!! It tells me about American civil war. Of course I have learnt it when I was in high school but I never knew its black side. Plus, the words impress me so much. One of my favorite is ‘But the past was the past.’ I can’t imagine I can think positively like that if I live in war time. I was impressed how strong and brave Scarlett was. Why don’t you think about the historical events and happenings over summer through reading this book?

  1. Nanako,

I'm glad you liked this book. It has so many elements of a great story; love, conflict, war, grand scale, and big characters. It is a story that many American schools still use to teach children about the Civil War. Thank you for your contribution to the summer reading blog.
