The Citadel

This novel is written by A.J.Cronin by 1937, set in Britain in early ninety century. The story is about a doctor, Andrew Manson’s life.
Andrew started working as a young doctor in a small coal mine in Wales with Dr Page. Then he found out some medical issues, Andrew was shocked by the fact that Dr Page works just for wage, making money not thinking about his patients. He struggled with the fact but he tried to improve the bad medical system. Andrew married to Christine and they moved to London. Christine is a very nice woman and she supported him through with his research and reports about the relationship between coal mine dust and lung diseases.  As the time went on as he started to works in London, he became a bad doctor like other doctors, just work to make money. Christine tried hard to change him but he never listened to her. However, something that makes Andrew to change his mind has happened in the end of the story.

When I read this book I was shocked like Andrew did at first to know about the medical problems and terrible things that doctors did to their patients. This was a long story and it was little bit difficult to understand what is going on in each scenes. However by reading this story I learned an important thing. I learned that money is the one thing that can change people’s mind, attitude and effect on the way of their life but love also have a great influence on how they think and changes their lives.

  1. Hi Shokochan!I'd like to read this book if I have a chance. If there is a movie of this story, that 'll be great!!! I am interested in how they change their mind if the money and the love are involved.
