THE CITADEL

This story is about medical problems, especially doctors'. There were a lot of doctors who didn't care about their patients and concentrated on making money in the U.K in the early 19 century. The bad doctors gave the colored water as medicine to their patient. But the protagonist, Andrew weren't like them. He regarded the doctors as stupid and tried to do his best. It was really hard for him to keep helping people. But he didn't give up. Through the busy life, he found a small and attractive woman, Christine who worked in school as a teacher. Finally he got married with Christine. She was a really excellent partner for him. Even though they had to spend in dirty house and didn't have enough foods to eat, she had never complained about them. And she helped him to get the degree. She teached him various things after he finished his work. The poor but happy life had changed, he had changed. He also became a bad doctor like the doctors who he hated. He couldn't endure to see the rich doctors who were stupid. Almost all the stupid doctors were not wiser than him, they didn't have any degrees. He gave the colored water to his patients even though he knew the cause of sick. Of course, Christine complained of his attitude to his patients. But he didn't hear her advice by the time one of his patients was dead. The cause of death wasn't him, but he made the situation. He changed his mind and decided to move to another city, but...

This is quite long story, but I really enjoyed reading this. He was not clever but wise at first. I can understand his feeling to focus on money and trying to be clever. Money changes people. He had a family who he should have protected. He had to be clever, I think. But as you know, the clever doctor wasn't a man who Christine loves. He did it for him and his wife at first, but she didn't want to.  It's really difficult problem.Through this book, I learned that doing right things is more imporatant than making money, and it's also important to love people around me.
