Black beauty

This novel ‘’Black Beauty’’ is written in1877 by Anna Swell and it is masterpiece of her works. The story is set in nineteen century in Britain when there were no cars, people treated horses very badly and used horses like machines. This novel reflects the era of nineteen century.

The main character in this novel is Black Beauty, a smart horse who has beautiful black hair. At the begging, he was living with his mother and his nice master happily and when he got old enough, he trained by human how to be a good horse and carry people in his back. At Mr. Gordon’s house, the second master, he met other horses Ginger and Merrylegs and he has spent a good time with them. However, as the time went on, they sold to other masters and badly treated.

The theme of this story is loss of innocence. Black Beauty learns what is bad and what is good in living society and grows up to an adult through these experiences in the story. As the story goes on from the view of horse, we can understand how animal thinks and feel. We also learn that humans were cruel to animals and how animals were hurt by humans through the story. I would not recommend this book if you really love animals because there were some sad scenes of horses, however, it also tells us that growing up to an adult and learn how to live as an adult are important.
